The Last Teeth In, and Often the First Trouble
Wisdom teeth are the leftovers of an era when human jaws were bigger and diets were rougher. Modern mouths rarely hold room for four more molars, so the newcomers crowd, turn sideways, or stall halfway through the gum. Some never cause a lick of trouble; others quietly percolate bacteria under a flap of gum tissue until one morning your cheek swells up. The exam and X-rays tell us which kind you have, and we only recommend removal when the pictures argue for it.
We track developing wisdom teeth at routine checkups from the teen years onward, so most of our young patients from Boutte, Hahnville, Destrehan, and Paradis are flagged well before anything hurts. Planned, calm removal beats an emergency one every time.

How Wisdom Teeth Works
Watch this short animation for a clear overview of the procedure.
Signs Your Wisdom Teeth Are Asking for Attention
- Dull pressure or aching behind your back molars
- Red, swollen, or bleeding gums at the very back of your mouth
- A jaw that feels stiff opening wide
- Bad breath or a sour taste that brushing will not shake
- Teeth that seem to be shifting or crowding up front
Severe swelling, fever, or trouble swallowing alongside jaw pain can mean infection, and those get handled the day you call. Walk-ins are welcome and same-day emergency slots are part of every schedule we keep, including Saturday mornings.
What the Actual Appointment Looks Like
Once you approve the plan, the visit itself is straightforward. We numb the area completely, add your chosen sedation, and remove the tooth, sometimes in small sections if that is how it comes out cleanest. Erupted teeth can be out in minutes; impacted teeth take more craft. Stitching closes the site when needed, gauze controls the bleeding, and you head home with written instructions and our phone number. The whole visit, paperwork to farewell, is usually shorter than the stories your friends tell.
Sedation: the Part That Changes Everything
Most patients use some form of sedation for this one. Laughing gas floats the nerves away and wears off by the parking lot, while oral sedation brings a deeper drowsy calm for tougher cases or bigger anxieties, with a driver required afterward. We match the option to your case and your comfort level, never the other way around. All of it falls under our sedation dentistry services.
Healing at Home: the Short Version
Ice on and off the first day, rest instead of yard work, and a menu of yogurt, scrambled eggs, and mashed potatoes for a few days. No straws, no smoking, no forceful spitting while the clot matures. Gentle warm salt-water rinses start the next day. Most patients return to school or work within several days and forget the whole thing by the end of the month. If anything seems off during healing, call 985-758-5110, we would rather look at a false alarm than a neglected complication.
Fair Costs and the Occasional Referral
Pricing depends on tooth count, impaction, and sedation, with a written estimate before the appointment and insurance benefits applied when your plan includes extraction coverage. CareCredit and Sunbit financing smooth out the remainder; details are on our financial options page. And when a tooth lies too close to a nerve or calls for sedation deeper than we keep in-house, we refer you to a trusted oral surgeon with your records transferred, because doing it right matters more than doing it all.
